Zoe Pearl

Working mainly with watercolours in combination with hand embroidery, I use upcycled textiles as my canvas to make embroidered paintings. I also like to paint on paper with watercolours exploring botanical details, vibrant colours and the playfulness of storybook illustrations. I find the ingenuity of nature fascinating and love to share the beauty and precious nature of these plants and animals in my work. I enjoy the meditative practice of hand stitching as it makes me slow down and lets my mind wander as I create.
In my previous career as a fashion designer I learnt a lot about textiles, however the unrelenting pace of mass manufacturing & often disposable nature of fashion was an uncomfortable reality of the industry. Taking time out of my busy day job to potter in our garden always gave me joy and after a move back to my home county of Wigtownshire, I am keen to use embroidery and illustration to celebrate the magic of nature around us here in Galloway.
Sustainability is also really important to me and I want to make work that is considerate in its use of materials. Using preloved fabric and beads also means every piece carries with it, its own story and these precious materials can hopefully continue to be treasured.
