Alison Corfield
Mixed Media Textile Artist
I am a full time textile artist and maker based in Kirkcudbright, Scotland’s art town. My pieces are all created using free machine embroidery on my sewing machine.
Inspiration
Some recurrent themes in my work are the sea, particularly the constantly changing tidal edges. I aim to capture the changes in light on the textures of the water and mud flats. An ongoing series of tree pieces is inspired by a collection of family papers: a scrap book dating from 1890 to 1898, containing letters.
Techniques
I use a wide range of natural fabrics with collaged papers and, occasionally, found objects. I then apply paints and dyes to the surface. I use layers in my work and often work with transparent fabrics overlaying and floating over the top. I work into these with free machine stitch, to add marks, to define details or add textures.
In addition to stitched framed pictures, I also make a range of smaller items using free machine stitch. These include jewellery, covered books and small vessels.
My working studio is at 17 Castle Street, Kirkcudbright, visitors are welcome by appointment, get in touch or see my website for open studio events.
