Tom spent many years as a metal worker in industry but his mother was a sculptor and blood will out. Now an artist and maker he is inspired by William Morris and others in the Arts and Crafts movement and his work comprises metalwork, with or without wood. His work includes hanging ornaments, sculptured pictures, mirrors, clocks etc and he works in hand beaten copper, brass and stainless steel, usually on an oak or ash frame but occasionally in Cedar, Spalted Beech, Yew, or other woods.
Tom initially lived in Merseyside where he exhibited in Wirral and Liverpool but was based in Moffat for six years and now lives in Kirkcudbright. He is currently exhibiting in Gracefields and Cloud 9 in Dumfries and a gallery in Kirkcudbright. He is a member of Craft Scotland, the Dumfries and Galloway Fine Art Society and DG Unlimited and he has a shop, Goffart, on Etsy. He is also a founder member of the Moffat Art Collective which had its inaugural exhibition in August 2015
Whilst in Wirral his work was chosen for the spring 2008 Exhibition at the Williamson Art Gallery and he also exhibited and sold in Chester. He has exhibited and sold at the DAGFAS annual exhibition since 2014 and at the Cat’s Moustache in Creetown, the Old School Dumfries, the Corn Exchange, Biggar; Livingstone’s in Castle Douglas, the Nail Factory Dalbeattie, Cut the Mustard in Langholm and Three Fishes in Peebles.
Tom makes everything by hand and prefers to work with locally sourced wood whenever available, bought in rough format and sanded, shaped and oiled by hand. He also uses recycled copper and other metals wherever possible. He is happy to work to commission.
